Transmission is going bad. I don’t think it’s absolutely trashed yet and could probably be rebuilt, typical symptoms of a messed up tranny shaking, jumping, slight burning smell. My question here is if that’s my only problem do I take steps to fix the tranny or should I sell? This is my first car. Any and all advice would be useful and appreciated.

17 year old car, I am sure that lots of other 'things' are nearing the end of their life cycle on your car.

Only you can decide if your car is worth spending the upwards of $3,000.00 for a rebuilt transmission and installation.
