Normal engine noise

Hello, I just bought a 2.5s 2002 altima last month and started noticing the engine noise when it's idle. It sounds like a diesel engine. Dealer says it's normal and the noise is from the injectors firing. Do you fellow altima owners hear it to? It's noticeable when the windows are closed, fan and radio are off.

Yeah the engine once you open the hood you can barely hear it. But I don't know since I have a V6. If no one replies here, go try test driving another 2.5 Alty.

not mine....
the dealer is feeding you horse poop!
Mine sounds the same. I believe it makes that noise because the chain drive....it doesn't have cheap-o belts like other cars :)
Another Nissan tech tip

They just keep getting better, did you get the pull to the right safety feature too?
My car makes that noise too. I can feel the accelerator pedal "shaking" sometimes too. The noise isn't constant though, so I've been debating whether or not to take it to the dealer.

I noticed that depending on where you stand, sometimes there is a noise from the motor. Inside the car you can hear what sounds like a chatter but very mild. If you open the hood you don't hear it. My girlfriends '00 does the same thing as well as a few other altimas I listened to. I think whatever noise it makes gets amplified by the shape of the car, sort of like a speaker housing.

wild willy.....aka Anti-Altima...lol

I hear that "diesel" sound too every now and again when I'm idling at a light. Didn't notice it til about 500 miles ago. I really don't like it... but at least I know I'm not the only one. Keep us updated if it requires warranty work!

yep, same symptoms. Maybe our car was made at the same time and assembled by the same crew.lol.[

Is this something that they can adjust/replace?
Sounds like it is very possible the same people made our cars! Well if you have any more problems, or find out what the problem is let me know!
The CVTC sounds tight though......wanna be vtec...hehehe :D
I have the same "diesel" type sound in the from the engine. The engine was super quiet until about 400 miles. Took it to the dealer this week, service guy told me it was fuel injector noise. But he also was trying to tell me that my other little issues were all just the way it was. I agree with Wild Willy about dealership service.

Anyway, I feel some of the noise is valve/pusher/rocker related. I took it over to another dealer today, for a second opinion. Much more helpful, he thinks the noise is not just the injectors. They are going to take a closer look Wednesday. At least they did not try to just blow me off.

I will let you know the results of Wednesday visit.
well i doubt its the injectors...

anyways this is unrelated but i wanan know:

is the 2.5 gen 3 altima any heavier than the first gen?

just wanna know...

cheers
SIMILAR NOISE

I just bought my 2.5 SL about a month and a half ago, and I too noticed the engine noise. It is an annoying engine sound that I only hear when the car is idling. I don't hear the noise if I am standing outside the car, or when the car is at cruising speed. I attributed this noise to the fact that the car is a 4 cylinder, and that the engine noise was one of the biggest complaints written about the car in a lot of the automotive magazines. They described the engine as unrefined, and very noisy, but despite the negative press, I liked the car when I test drove it and bought it. They actually commented about the engine noise that the V6 produced as well, but they raved about the HP. So I guess the authors figured it was a wash. A little bit of noise, for a lot more juice. My previous car was a Saturn SC2 that was also a 4 cylinder, but that engine was very quiet when it was running well, but didn't have nearly the HP as my new Altima. Judging from the replies to the original post of this problem, I'm begining to think that this engine noise is not normal, and I better take the car in to have it checked. Thanks

RFL2002SL let us know what they say. The more people complain about this to the dealer the more they get pressured to investigate the issue and come up with something.
