If it was on the thread's you should be using antisieze on the threads ... Also if you wash your engine alot, water can get down in the plug tubes and sit down there causing the metal to rust ....

Was it RED, or rust burnt orange color?

If it is red, don't know what to tell you....

But if it is in face rust orange, I would be worrying... Shawn could be right, and water could have caused rust down there.

Does the car run okay??? Anyone else know?

could mean one of the following:

worn: rounded electrodes, reddish color... get new ones.
high speed glazing: yellowish glazed appearance, combustion chamber temp has risen suddenly during acceleration (misfires at high speeds)... get new ones, and the correct size.
normal: brown, to tan color... alright.

this is straight outta the back of the Haynes manual for our car, look at pep boys or any other place like that...
