I ordered a chip off of eBay about three months ago from GTX Performance. Installed the chip in jiffy...and POW!!! With the chip coupled with my Stillen Intake, the Alt was finally livin' up to it's name, BLZNALT! Now, the company claims a 20hP gain, and I would be obliged to say that it's up there. However, the claim that there is no loss in gas mileage is BS. I have been keeping track of my fill-ups the last three months and it seems that I probably lost about a hundred miles to the tank. Better performance at the sacrifice of gas mileage is alright with me (it's worth the noticeable power increase). But does anyone know of any possible future problems that I could face if I leave the chip in? I can't seem to find anyone who can give me the true low-down on this "cheap thrill" chip.

If you keep puttin your foot in it I imagine tires will be the first to suffer. How is your oil consumption???

You're right about the tires!...but I'm not too sure about the oil. I get an oil change every month, and there hasn't been any noticeable problems.

What in the world in an "intake chip" ?

Where does it install?

edit: I just checked out ebaymotors. Now I know what you're talking about. They start them at $4.99 and mass advertise them for just about all models of cars, including the LS1. Someone in our club tried one for kicks. No surprise that it did nothing at all. I'm not positive about this, but I think he cut it open to find nothing inside :angry4:

I hope you aren't talking about the same thing, but if you are I'd get it off your car in a hurry.

If we are talking about a different "chip", I'll pay for the dyno time (before and after) if it gives you anywhere near 20 hp. We can go to the dyno shop in Glen Burnie that I take my LS1 to (I live within about a 1/2 hour of you).

Actually, it's nothing but a little resistor (something that looks like it could be found in a Radio Shack). True, I only paid a couple of dollars for the thing, but it definitely created a noticeable hP increase. Anyone who has rode/driven my car notices the gain. 20 hP? Optimistic...10 hP Realistic. I just got into the performance upgrade frame of mind recently with this car, so I don't know what 20 horses really feels like. I'm not sure about before, but now I noticed that I'm hitting 90 mph in 3rd gear without redlining. The increased torque and hP can now be felt strongly from 1st through 5th gear, while the Stillen Intake can be heard with a powerful melody (whereas before, I would only hear it in the high RPM's in like the 4th gear). All of the places on the web that sell these chips claim that no damage will be caused to the car. I have been driving mine for about 3 months now. Car's still healthy. I guess that I'll be the tester for those who want to know in a year, but I'm not taking it out unless someone can give me the straight scoop on this chip (and the possible long-term damages that it may cause).

DP03: What club are you talking about? Very interested in meeting people in our area in the tuning scene...especially anyone with Altimas. Ever since they brought down the Metro street racing, I haven't really seen anything but, 'Caprices and 'Vics, as well as the Escalades, Denalis, etc.

My local LS1 club is the Eastern Fbody Association. Favorite website club is www.LS1tech.com

I don't think the resistor will hurt anything. I'm just thinking your gains are probably the Stillen intake and not the chip. Does it plug into your MAF?

Hey, I'm going to do a racepipe (or maybe headers if they ever come out). I'd like to dyno before and after. Let me know if you want to come to the dyno with me.

The hardest part was just finding the coolant air temperature sensor...I actually went to Nissan and asked a Mechanic. He was irate that I would even want to know. He did not want me to modify my car in any way. Said it would damage the computer. I did it anyways. It took less than 30 seconds to install. I just opened the sensor casing, plopped the chip in, closed the casing, closed the hood, and drove off. Immediate results. It blew my mind going so fast, that it actually scared the crap out of me. It was too good to be true.

Yes, my skepticism was partially correct this time. You couldn't get all that added hP for nothing. Gas suffers tremendously. I usually get 460 mp/tank (according to the trip computer). With my driving habits and routines, I used to fill up about once every 4-5 days. Now, it's more like 3-4 days. I might even take down the mileage the next time I fill up, now that this subject comes to mind, for future reference. As far as the Stillen Intake, I felt the difference in the higher RPM, but at a modest $200 or so that I got it for almost a year ago. The chip was $6, and I feel a huge difference. Together, they feel awesome. I just need the money to go ahead and get a pulley, racing pipe, and exhaust from Stillen. Until then, I feels nice to drive alongside a car at 70 mph and take off furiously to 100 mph in a matter of seconds!

DP03:

NO, sorry not the intake. I have had it on for almost a year now, and knew the car's performance like my own child. Heck, I've got 41,000 miles on the car. The chip definitely gave the car the increase. Now, who's to say that maybe a combination of the chip and the intake wouldn't be a key factor?

i've seen this "chip" before, there are pictures of it all over the internet showing it side by side with the radio shack product. It's the EXACT SAME THING as a 20 cent (yes thats 20 cents) resistor that can be purchased at radio shack. A coworker of mine installed one in his SER, told me he felt no difference whatsoever, can't speak for the altima though. If anyone wants to try it ask blznalt to post a pic of it and run to radioshack and spend a quarter for it.

...And just where exactly is the 'coolant air temperature sensor' located?? Enquiring minds want to know! :D

Sorry, skepticism is my middle name. Sounds like a scam. Like intake turbos, Electronic TURBO Supercharger, magnetic fuel treatments, to improve gas mileage and horsepower, oil lubricants / engine treatment that promises to increase horsepower, etc. Mostly used to target naive people.

I think what it does is fool the ECU into thinking the engine is still cold which keeps the air\fuel mixture rich.

I think . . . . . . .. . . . .:D

i have no idea what it does, all i know is if you want one, go to radio shack and bring a quarter.

Hard to explain where the Coolant Air Temperature Sensor is, because there are so many connections that look like it. Just ask a Nissan specialist. Also, BA, that's exactly what it does. Scam or not, it worked for my car...No one's making you spend your soda fund! I wasn't trying to promote this product for anyone. I was originally asking if anyone knew of any long-term problems that could occur from installing this chip, so please try to spare everyone the late-night standup comedy jokes.

I still haven't gotten into posting of pictures and stuff in these forums and I don't have a camera. Once again, scam or no scam, I am done trying explain what this chip does. Check out BA's remark...it's straight to the point. I didn't try to start any debates on whether or not there is added hP, because I already know there is. 20 hP...most likely not. A lot more power than an intake can offer...most definitely! Forgive me for mentioning this chip. I assume that no one can answer the original question and that's okay. DP03, I'm always up for that offer to dyno the car to satisfy everyone's curiosity.
