Last chance to talk me out of it...

2005 Altima 3.5SL Super Black, w/Charcoal Leather. Just came in yesterday.
Dealer is holding it for me until tommorrow.

After looking around and coming close to getting an Infiniti G35 but deciding not to because I need a sedan and don't like the looks of the G35 sedan, I've pretty much settled on the Altima. Won't be talked into a Camry or Accord (don't like the styling).

I am a little worried about a few things with the Altima...

Torque steer - I'm not planning on drag racing so I hope this won't be a problem.

Squirrely Auto Trans - I wanted the 3.5 cause I like driving in the moutains. If the auto trans sucks, I'll be back to the drawing board. I would rather have an auto but I would go with a stick in an Altima before I go with the Camry or Accord. Recommendations?

Radio Reception - I listen to talk radio.

The only other car I had been seriously looking at was a new 2005 BMW 325i
but the back seats too small and they are getting ready to change (ruin) the
body on the 2006 325i.

I've found that the torque steer is really only evident during hard accleration.
Not noticeable during 'normal' driving.

Auto tranny...can't comment, I got the 5 speed. During test drives the auto tranny seemed to behave ok.

Radio reception is fine on mine but there's mixed reports.

Have you tried the SE? Bit firmer ride, might suit your driving in them there hills.

Don't get it?

Why not?

I did just notice that they slightly changed the nose on the 2005 and I really
liked the nose on the 2004 better. Wonder if a 2004 nose would fit on the
2005? Seriously, the front end looks "chunky" around the grill compared to the 2004.

Get it. I thought about the G35, but the Altima has more rear leg room, and it is an awesome value. I have had an '03 for nearly a year, and it has been my favorite vehicle so far. I used to drive a 92 mustang GT that wasn't this fun, and it is far more functional. To answer your concerns:

1) Torque Steer - Yeah, it's kinda bad. You can really feel it if you are on the throttle and turning at all (even just changing lanes). Don't forget, 245hp is an insane amount to be coming out the front wheels. I had an 89 Escort that that had worse Torque Steer and it only had like 80 hp. So..Long story short, it's not bad all things considered.

2) Auto Trans - My auto can be a bit slow to downshift from 4th. I think that any input from me here is moot as I think they completely changed the auto for 05 (5 spd?)

3) Radio Reception - I listen to talk radio too. My reception is so good that I pick up AM in a concrete garage at work. When I drive my wife's minivan to work, I loose all reception in the garage. I have heard other guys complain about reception though. I have the NDSS Stock Single CD/FM/AM system.

People are going to bitch about any car. I have loved my car. It is alot of fun, It can whoop all of the ricer wannabes on the street, It has plenty of room for the family, Looks cool and gets good gas mileage to top it off. Reliability and Resale are good too. That being said, the issues that I have had are:

Crappy Struts - Going to shop Tuesday to replace my 3rd.
Crappy Tires - I am getting flat spots, resulting in a shimmy.
Various Interior Rattles

This list isn't any worse than most vehicles now days. Go for it, you won't regret it.

re. lowriderman3

But I really like the new interior on the 2005...

Has any one noticed what I'm talking about with the front end?
The 2004 has a "gully" around the grill that blended nicely into the lines of the hood. On the 2005, the gully is gone, giving the front end on the 2005
a more "blunt" appearance. I mean, it's not like the front end on the 2005 is ugly, especially when compared to say the Toyota Camry or Acura TL, it's just that I liked the front end on the 2004 better.

Yeah, from the scond that I saw the '05, I felt like the changes looked tacked on. It was like a talented designer drew up the 02-04, then some hack decided that it was time for a change. At least they didn't do that buck tooth s**t like they did with the Maxima and Sentra.

I love mine, I even have an 02 with almost 36,000 miles on it. I agree the 05 interior is really nice. But yeah the new changes to the front end kinda look bad. But once its lowered, add side sills, and a new lip comes out I think it will look good. I had some rattles too but EVERY other car I've had including new 2002 VW GTI (x-wifes car), 01 Cougar V6 fully loaded, 01 Mustang GT, 98 Lexus, RX-7, 98 Eclipse GT etc. have had WAYYYYY worse rattles. All mine were due to loose screws. 2 on the middle console in the far back sides, and the door panels which are held on with plastic retainers. I just added a screw to the bottom corners of each door and they are REALLY on there now and no longer rattle. For the rear of the car I just sound deadened the trunk and rear deck. Now I haven't heard anything rattle in my car for 6 months. In the dash I found that behind the middle dash console piece the air line to the middle vents was disconnected and rattled. I just reconnected it and duct taped it and no more inner dash rattle.

I would do what I did, buy the SE instead of the SL and add better cheaper options.

HID Phillips 6000K kit: $500 (looks way better and looks brighter too)
Autoleatherinc.com leather seats for 05 altima: $550 tops of front and rear armrests are all leather unlike factory, headrests are leather unlike factory, the rear seats are all leather unlike factory, and the entire front seats are leather unlike factory. THe leather is 100 times better than factory, even better than katskins and leatherseats.com who have great leather, but they too do not have leather headrests, or leather armrests, or leather end pieces on the rear seats and they cost more. The style of the leather is the same as luxury cars, kind of scrunched look instead of boring flat leather. Not the REALLY bunched up insert kind, they looks sport and nice, the leather is just incredible, comparable to some of the best leather in the best cars on the street.

Save you money and get better stuff. And that way you get the sport suspension because the SL has gay squishy suspension.

dont settle with an 04, although they are fantastic cars, you will be essentially driving an "old car"(for example the difference between an 96 maxima and a 97 maxima was significant, even though it consisted of a few minor touch ups). The 05 altima has a kick ass interior too, i think its erogonomic as well, all the controls you need are right at your finger tips.

As for driving on the mountains - the 3.5SE will be more than ample, 250 horses ;). The auto tranny so far has not given me any problems, except you will occasionally get a hard shift from 3-->2, which is not neccesarily a bad thing, nice quick and firm shifts usually lead to longer life on the tranny's part. Also if you find that you need some real quick acceleration, you can pop it into the tipronic mode and you'll have 5 gears to play with.

In terms of torque steer, i find that if I want to accelerate hard, you will have to have both hands on the steering wheel off the line. However, once you are rolling you will not have any problems what so ever. If you are driving "normally"(pressing the gas 1/4-1/3 of the way) you wont have any problems.

On a scale from 1-10 i would rate this car as an 8.....only reasons are because you dont get the phenomenal Infiniti service and also because nissan doesnt allow you to get the leather interior and xenons without getting the bose - hhaha.

i really hope you have a nice buying experience, and dont forget to use carsdirect.com as a reference.

I signed the line

But I don't have the car yet... It's supposed to be in today or tommorrow.
Thet gave me a loaner 2002 Altima till it shows up.

I did test drive a 2005 Altima 3.5 SL like the one I'm getting except the one I drove was red.

The interior on the 2005 is not all it's cracked up to be. I was especially
disappointed by the black "felt" inserts on the doors. WTF? It looks like that are made out of headliner material. Why in the world they did not cover the inserts with even simulated leather defies me. Even hard plastic would have looked better than that lint magnet black felt.

Overall, the interior still has a "cheap" quality to it. Actually I thought the hard plastic dash of the 2002 loaner looked better. Sure the 2005 dash has more compartments and chrome trim here and there but the only thing worse than plastic is chrome plated plastic. Maybe I'm just spoiled because I had been so close to getting a BMW 325i and I'm comparing the interior to that of a BMW.

I also test drove a 2005 Infiniti G35 w/6 speed manual. I will say this,
there interior of the 2005 Infiniti G35 is not much better than the 2005 Altima.
They did at least cover the door inserts in leather but other than that,
it's the exact same steering wheel that's in the altima. I was suprized that
the G35 I test drove had a lound rattle coming front the middle of the dash that sounded like a loose screw. The salesman said they would fix it but
still.

The radio seemed to pick up the FM stations in my area ok but it sounded like crap when the salesman turned it up. I hope the CD player sounds better.

So do I think the Altima is going to be the ultimate ride I really was looking for? Nah. Something keeps telling me... Get the G35... Get the G35...
My wife would kill me, but the kid would fit in the back (he's only 5),
The straight drive was fun but I drive mostly in the city and it would get
old quick in all the stop and go traffic. Crap, crap, crap.... I hate buying a new car.

I think you should get it.
I bought the 05 3.5SE in March and really like the car even with the issues. (I had to replace one of the front strut 2 months ago, and just realiced yesderday that I will have to change the other one too....)

Torque steer. No problem. As you said you will not drag race the car. Normal driving in more than OK.

Auto tranny. For me to go to San Diego, I have to drive through 120 miles of mountains. The elevation change is from below sea level to 4000 feets and the transmision hold up just fine. And remember, you still have the tritronic option.

Radio reception. The reception is OK. Not great but OK.

Overall, it is a fun car to drive even with some issues.

Changed by mind

Well, after thinking about I changed my mind and got an Infiniti G35 sedan,
black w/tan leather interior. I think I could have lived with the Altima but
but the G35 was not that much more expensive so I went with the G35.
