Well my brother is is Japan right now(Army) and really wants a Skyline. He has enough dough to get one, buy doestnt have enough to get it over here and titled and all the other stuff that goes along with it.
My question is this - what all has to be done ?Why cant he just pull the engine ,ship it, then ship the car?
I too am enlisted and go to basic in Jan.I told him I would use my enlistment to pay for all this stuff(but the car 1/2 mine:) ).
can any one help me on this?
Please dont knock on me,I know its "out there"but I really wouldnt mind being part owner of one.
One more thing .We dont have to pass emissions in this state.

Well , since I'm getting no replies I'll just post on what I KNOW.
I went to the dmv yesterday to ask them what i needed to do to get this thing titled and registered. They gave me a form and said all they needed was the tax receipts, title, and insurance.I asked them a couple other question as well concerning emissions, glass, ect.I was told that since we have no inspection in this state they didnt care about that.(Sweet)
So I left there and went to the sherrifs office and asked them about it.Same story,no inspection-no worries.(Sweet)
Then I went to 3 different insurance companys(allstate, nationwide, and some other one).None of them could even insure the car. They dont list it in there system. The lady from Allstate called her under-writer and they said they couldnt do it because of availability of parts.
What insurance company insures Skylines?I have a feeling the insurance company will be the one to require the modifications(i.e. glass, reinforcements, ect):banghead:
Any help.......come on guys/girls.

IIRC, only R32 Skylines are legal in the U.S. I have to look into it more, though. Look into what happened with Motorex.

Sorry... Not true... I have a Legal DOT released R33 gtr. Until last year, 89-99 (ER34 was not legal to import) skylines could be brought in legally. Last year, the NHSTA changed the RI list and made only 96-98 legal due to airbag issues. Big problem here, the 96-98 are fitted with obd1 and have no egr system. The NHSTA will not allow the modifications needed to add this to the car. So, long story short, you can't get a skyline that isn't already here with a dot bond release.

Motorex closed while my car was still in progress. Hiro the owner went to jail and it closed down, however they were in trouble long before that. It's sad that he couldn't stay on top of thing. I feel he tried, but not hard enough. The DOT/NHSTA ended up giving me a special release. I'm most likely selling mine soon. Just kinda tired of working on cars.

BTW.... Even if you are in the military. Customs will most likely not le the car in the country. You can bring it in as race only if you show what races you will be running it in and some type of race permit or license.

You can try, I've known people to have gotten the car in, and others to have gotten their entire containers turned around. My buddy actually has an unreg. 4door GTS.

As for the GTR, I wasn't aware of the new NHTSA determinations, just know that the crash testing was only done on the R33 chassis - basically the guys doing the crash testing out in the east coast (I forgot the name) tricked NHTSA.

I had an R33 Vspec fully legal, it was a 96 reg as 95. My buddy has a fully registered 98 R33 shell (reg paperwork only, stickers, etc. only, it's crashed) available for sale if you're interested.

Hi CARTLLA8891,
I'm in the same spot. I'm currently in JP, and want to export back mine to my home in CA before the contract at my current job ends. Could you share the info you got with me? Thanks!
Just go to the NHTSA website, locate the list of RI's (Reigstered Importers) and start calling. There's a few people importing Skylines these days, although I'm told the NHTSA is lot letting a lot of the regisration be completed.

Either way SUBSTANTIAL modifications are needed to the vehicle to conform to EPA and FMVSS - it may not be worth the cost.

Good luck!
