I am thinking of getting a radar detector - cany anyone recommend a good one and how does it work?
I did some research and a lot of people are saying the better ones are Valentine 1, Escort Passport 8500 X50, Bel RC 65
any suggestions?

Please explain why you are so for the Passport - do you have one? Like I said I like the idea the the Valentine has two antennas - front and back - where passport only has one in the front like all the others. Which is telling me that the Valentine might be more efficient picking up waves - or is that not correct?
Cause I am afreaid, where I live, cops follow you and measure your speed, that the passport will not pick up the laser from the back fast enough to dedect the radar

Passport is good overall, but if you are worried about cops following you then Valentine would work better since it tells u where the radar is coming from. But if a cop is trying to get your speed from behind u, all he has to do is get semi close and cut it on, then u are screwed.

BTW, I have a Passport, I like it and it has saved me several times.

Extremely happy with my Escort Solo 2. I have had it now for almost a year. I used to have the previous version (had the Solo for 8 months) and this one has a much better display and range. Saved my ass quite a few times.

I've got a passport 8500 X50 and its amazing. The reviews say it catches KA farther than the V1 which is what most cops use now. It also doubles as a voltmeter so it actually does something semi - useful when it isnt alarming you of radar. I've never owned a V1 so I cant really say its better. The Passport does have 360 degree detection but it doesnt have the arrows to alert you of where the radar is coming from. I really like the smart cord too, it goes real well in our car. Instead of reaching way up to the windsheild you just have to press the mute button on the cigarett lighter.

Check out this,

ive only heard good things about the v1. that will be my xmas present to myself this year. i just dont know how you can beat the arrow detection and bogey counter.
Franzd, did your recent ticket spawn the sudden interest in the detectors? just remember that some areas can give you an additional fine if you are useing a detector...

I have neither of the detectors you talk about. I use a Whistler 1585 it's about 4 years old but it to this day it has never let me down. If COPS are following then they might not be using RADAR on you, they might be pacing you. They will follow you until they match your speed, and then they will write you up on the speed displayed on their speedometer.

I will be upgrading my Radar Detector soon too, and if I had to choose it would be either the Bel or the Valentine. I've heard the Escorts have issues when it comes to heat.

where did you hear that with Escort having issues with heat and what exactly is the problem
yes, my interest in a Detector has to do with my recent ticket I have received. I know that sometimes not even a detector can save you especially not if cops follows you and measures ur guesses your speed - measure and match speed woith his car.but i wouild just feel better to konw that i have a better protection then before

where are those detectors installed anyway? in the cenTer of the front wind shield window? what is the best place for it? half way up the window or up higher closer to the cars roof?

I live in New York State/Long Island - does anybody know if detectors are legal or not and if I can get find additioanl $$$ for having one?
But cant that detector not easily and quickly removed lets say a cops stops you? you just take it away before he walks up to your window right?

I live in Texas and have never had a problem. It gets to be 100+ here all of the time in the summer and my detector has always worked perfect!! I wanted a cordless detector because I got sick of the cords and always having to have something plugged in. I would buy this detector again in a hear beat.

no the valentine isnt cordless. cordless detectors arent as good as ones with power cords. they dont have the sufficient amount of power going to them to have a farther view of detection.

beltronics rx 65 and the new escort are the 2 best detectors out on the market. they pic up pop radar ( where the valentine doesnt) . also does it really matter if the radar detector tells you where the radar is coming from ?..when i hear the beep , i automatically slow down no matter if its coming from the front or rear.

another tid bit , and u guys can look this up . but beltronics bought out escort last year , but didnt change the name for sales purposes. so the escort is made by beltronics now. i have the vector 995 which is a step lower than the rx 65 and it works great . it has alot of features. just look at the beltronics website and see the comparisons for yourself.

thks a lot, what are Pop Radars
my concern is,and pl correct me if that should not be a concern - that all the detectors have no antenna/sensor facing the back where teh V1 has that , and having said this, I am assuming that V1 would pick up radar from the back better
Is that correct or is that not the case?

have you been to radardetectors . com ?..they have all the info on there that u are looking for. and yes they do have 360 ' radar detection like the valentine.

Pop radar is when the cop turns on the radar and shuts it off really fast . what this does is give him an estimate of how fast you are going and then in turn he can possibly follow you and get a better speed rating on how fast you were going. then give you a ticket . its a very common type of radar usage on the east mid- atlantic states.

But seriously there are many way cops can get you even if u have the best radar system on the planet. all they have to do is let the radar warm up . then shut it off and when u are 100 feet away turn it on at the last minute and "whamo!" just clocked you speeding. radar detectors are only good against honest cops giving drivers a fair chance!...lol j/k mr .officer

Unlike most people here I guess, I don't beleive in spending $300 + on the detector, I don't care how many antennas it has.

- if the cop wants to laser you - you are toast I don't care what detector you got - laser beam is what - 2 inches wide? If he is onto your licence plate - nothing will save you

- pop can still get you too

- they can also follow you and match your speed without turning anything on

What do I care to know if the cop is out there, 4 miles ahead? 2 or 1 mile warning is good enough for me. I'll slow down either way.

The bottom line - do not buy the detector if you think that it will give you absolute protection. It will not.

Buy it if you want to prevent "casual speeding" ticket, for example when you are in the pack of fast driving cars or going downhill and the cop is waiting around the corner, fishing.

I have been using PNI Traveller II for close to a year now in both my cars, and love it. I get very few false alarms on it. Can be had for about $100 of Ebay. It's cordless, but I don't use it as such, as it says that it drains batteries in 12 hours.

But then again - that's just me. :)

Pop radar is radar that sends out quick bursts of radar. Becuase of the short burst a lot of older detectors cannot catch this. However if you ever get a ticket while police are using this you can easily get out of it. In most states police are advised to use pop to get an estimate and then turn on their normal radar. This is because pop can be inaccurate and police are unable to maintain a tracking history of your vehicle.

One thing i've found out is people with a v1 are very passionate about their precious V1. They will never accept that another detector is anywhere close or god forbid.....better.

Haha, Yeah laser is a pain in the ass but if your a hardcore speeder you can get laser blockers which are neither illegal and work perfectly. It doesnt matter to me because cops cant use laser in nj. :). However I use to have a cheap $100 detector and now have the passport x50 and the difference is significant. I get cops from over hills, way around bends, straight aways are a joke with this thing.
