I own a 96 Altima, everything has been good until recently. It has begun to act up. The rpm drops drastically every now and then. It evetually drops to 0 and the car shuts off! I try to start it up again it is just wont stay on! I starts running, goes up to 1000 rpm and then shuts off again. I tried gasing it to help it stay on, but it does not work. Does anyone now what the problem might be?

There's probably a bunch of things it COULD be, but for some reason it reminds me of a problem someone on here had that was resolved by replacing the gas cap.
Next time it happens, make a note of how much gas is in the tank and try loostening the gas cap, then try restarting.

here's what to check..in order
1- check to see if you have spark..from the distributor, cap, check plugs, wires
2- try the gas cap thing
3- check fuel system. fuel filter, pump, injectors. take a look at the tip of your muffler..is there any black soot?
3- o2 sensor
4- MAF

has there been a check engine light? you go in those steps because of price and simplicity
