If the altima shifter is repaired, can the solenoid then fail and the process and cost have to be started all over again? One member said that her shifter failed three times! (Why didn't we buy a Toyota instead?)

Yes, anything electrical or mechanical can fail.
Even Toyota products have mechanical and electrical failures...look no further than the Toyota bz4x electric vehicle, and the recall nightmare it has caused. I'm sure many of those owners have asked..."Why did we buy a Toyota instead?"
