I have the Haynes manual right in front of me, somehow I just can't find the torque value for installing the spark plug. Or does tighten the spark plug hand tight, then 1/4 turn will do the job?

After my 30k service, I notice my engine have larger vibration when my clutch engage. This happened once before and my friend fixed it simply by reinstalling the spark plug. So I believe the dealer installed the plug too tight or loose.

I read about puting dielectric grease (vaseline works as well) on the plug wires, inside the boot and apply some more on the spark plug terminal.

My question is:
1. Do I need to know the torque value? Or hand tighten, then 1/4 turn will do the job?
2. Can vaseline replace dielectric grease?
3. Which side is the terminal? The side w/ or w/out the gap?
4. What is the purpose of dielectric grease?

Thanks in advance. I'm getting to know my car. :)

the diaelectric grease is for better conductivity between the spark plug wire and the spark plug. the terminal is the side the spark plug wire attaches to. i would use the grease over vaseline because i dont know if the vas is conductive. tightening the plugs the way you stated, is OK. the tq value is actually on the box if you buy ngk's.

vaseline does work. it works on my **** so why wont it work on the plugs? hahha that was sick my bad. oh and how do you hand tighten spark plugs when they are in the cylinder? you got some magical hands or something?

Already used Anti-Sieze =(

While I'm working on it today, I realized I forgot to ask about the 1/4 turn. The 1/4 turn to tighten or loosen? I tried to tighten it at first but afriad I'll break the thread. So I loosen it 1/4 turn instead. I took the car out for a ride and it felt better then before.

So I assume loosen 1/4 turn is the right way to do it? What is the side-effect if I did it wrong? Thanks for the help

nope, TIGHTEN it 1/4 turn. you need to crush that ring on the sparkplug so it will seal correctly. tighten them all the way down, then a quarter turn MORE. if you leave them 1/4 turn loose the way they are now, they will work themselves even more loose and then youll have a leak on that cylinder.

Uhh Jesus! So glad I asked.

So what is the definition of hand tighten? To the point I can't easily turn the wrench? The second I get your response, I'm gonna go work on my car out in the dark.

asleepaltima, you saved my car... :)
yup, put the spark plug socket on the spark plug and turn it till it stops. once it stops, a quarter turn should feel pretty tight. i think the actual torque was like 22 but i could be wrong... remember, all the way down, and then 1/4 turn. Good Luck!

hey man dont stress

do u have a torque wrench?

the manual states 20-25nm of torque... i usually do 15lb-ft, but since last tiem the engine was kinda warm i torqued it to 10lb-ft..

i rekon the 1/4 turn is fine but just so u kno, just 10lb-ft was way more thana 1/4 turn after hand tight... (which was me turning the entension bar without wrench)

cheers

i guess i should also mention that you should be doing this cold.
ahh shutup ! :D

oh well 50% less torque should do it.. reminds me i should check that up when its dead cold... meh.

point is dont stress.. its no biggie.
