Hello all,

I would like to do a write up about timing chain problems on VQ35DE engines.
Mainly there are three problems:

1: Broken timing chain guide

2: Worn secondary timing chain tensioners

3: Sticky main timing chain tensioner

I've done a lot of searching on the forums about timing chain problems on VQ35DE. My car's problem was a rattle during start up. It would rattle everytime I start the engine after it was sitting for about 1 hour or so. Sometimes it would rattle sometimes not. Finally I openned the cap where the main timing chain tensioner and I saw that main timing chain guide broke.
Usually it brakes from the top and slides down. Therefore the main tensioner fully extends. Please look at the pictures down, so I can fully explain myself :)

I took her to my local mechanic here in brooklyn where I got a quote of $500 for the labor to fix this problem I would like to post pictures, so you guys can see where to look in case you have such problems.

On this picture I circled where the tensioner is pushing against the guide and ruins himself and the guide.

On this picture you can see how the tensioner is fully engaged, but it does not help to create tension on the chain.

On this picture I tried to pull that plastic on the guide that slided down, because the top clip broke off and you can see where the tensioner suppose to push.

Today I got a call from mechanic. I went there to see whats going on. i took the pictures.

Please note that it was done without removing the engine from the car.

Wow that's interesting.. I didn't replace that chain rail when I just had mine apart but it did not show any signs of wear. I did replace the top one between where the cams are. Hopefully that doesn't happen to me or anyone here.

You had a shop tear into it for you, curious as to how much they are charging you if you don't mind.

You had a shop tear into it for you, curious as to how much they are charging you if you don't mind.
Yeah I had shop do it for me, because I dont have the opportunity to do it myself here in Brooklyn lol.

They are charging me $500 for the labor plus parts. It is a good price, because dealer charges around $1500-$2000.

I would suggest you putting an updated chain rail, but hopefully nothing is going to happen with yours.

Yea I would if it was still apart, but its back in the car and running. Hopefully I have had my share of weird rare problem with my engine and wont have another one like this..

I take it you are doing the secondary chains and rails too right?

No. Rest of my parts are in really good condition, so I am not going to touch them. I am only replacing that chain guide. Also, I will add more clips and speacial glue on it, so it will be more reliable. However Nissan already knows about this problem and they redesigned the parts.

The reason mechanics charging us that much money, because it is real pain to get that timing chain cover off.
Btw our timing chains should last the life of the car.

Honestly, I like this motor power vise, but with this faulty valve mechanism we got :eek:wned: lol

Yeah the chains are good for the life, but the secondary chains have problems and are prone to making noise at higher mileage. You might as well replace the secondary chains and tensioners per that TSB. Would suck to have to pull the timing cover again to replace those tensioners later because now you have the whining noise.. just saying.

I know how much a PITA it is to take off that cover, as I did it myself :banghead:

Yeah I wish I could, but it would cost me money to put in. It is a big job because you have to adjust cams and etc.

Fingers crossed nothing would happen again. :)

Btw our timing chains should last the life of the car.
just a FYI most automakers assume this to be "100,000"
just like those "lifetime Transmissions"

to expect a wear part, not just something mild but a HEAVY wear part to last longer then that..... Mine Rattles when cold but besides that.. I only notice it after startup.. I always Have. since the Day I bought my Car...

Thanks for the info - :cool:

I am looking into eventually purchasing a low mileage engine and doing a few upgrades to it. Not that my car needs a new engine now, but VQ35DE's are pretty cheap. I honestly think my engine will carry me well since I average about 300 miles every 2 weeks, which works out to approximately 7800 miles a year.

Update:

Picked up the car today. Everything is working perfectly.
Everything is running smooth and quite. :)

My problem was a broken timing chain guide.
Will post a few more pictures later :)

good sticky. my car has this problem on cold start up. ticks for a few minutes then stops when it's warm. i'm definitely not looking forward to doing this work over the summer.

heres some of them. It doesnt have the chain rail that breaks in this list below. But while you are in there you might aswell do the secondary chain guides/chains.

The Part numbers for the TSB for the secondary chain noise are below.
Secondary Chains: 13028-ZK01C - QTY 2
Tensioner Shoe(Guide rails): 13097-ZK01C - QTY 2
O-Ring Front Cover: 15066-2Y510 - QTY 2
O-Ring Front Cover: 15066-5E510 - QTY 2
Crankshaft Seal: 13510-7Y000 - QTY 1
Drain plug seal on oil pan if you wish to replace it: 11026-01M02
Oil pan front seal: 11121-7Y000
And the rail that breaks, someone else can fill that info in.

I had my timing chains serviced and I a year later I am having a rattle for a second at cold starts. It makes me wonder if the dealer did the work....

I would wonder also , you weren t there to check them out . Some places cut corners .
