205 is the width of the tire, 40 is the heith, and 17 is the size of the rim. low profile pretty much means it has a sporty look

Profile means the side...or the outer edge of the tire. Your "profile" is a picture of the side of your face...

So "low profile" means that the side of the tire is not as thick or "high" as say a 60 or 70 series tire.

wrong.. the second number is the aspect ratio. Its a percentage of the width.

low profile means it has a lower ratio of height to width. usually the tire will be wider, giving it more grip, although you end up losing ride comfort since its a lower tire.

If you're looking for the technical definition these guys are right

If you're lookin for a ghetto definition - Profile means the distance from the edge of the tire (say where the tire touches the ground) to the edge of the RIM. Low profile means that this distance is less than the normal 50-65 width.

So 40 would be low profile.

*guys don't flame me .. i'm not that ghetto - i could be wrong about this!!! :p
