I have a 2005 altima 2.5 that is stuck in 3rd gear so I'm hesitant to drive over 45mph. Also, the gear indicator on the cluster won't display what gear it in. When this first started to happen it wouldnt go into any gear (not engaging) so I took out the center console and the gear cable had come out of the gear selector so I popped it back in and it was fine for about a week. Then it did this not engaging into drive gear stuck in 3rd gear and doesn't display on my cluster. Any ideas on what it might be? Please help!

Either transmission is stuck in 'safe mode ' because the computer is telling it something is wrong and protect yourself....
Or, there is an actual problem with the transmission; first thoughts are the ground wire that mounts outside and underneath the transmission on driver's side, it can directly affect the trans shifting- Clean, replace, and or solder new ground wire to it. It has a pigtail on the transmission side then just connects to body of frame. (I cleaned and modified mine to prevent issues in future).
There is also a resistor in the engine bay that controls how hard it shifts. Driver's side, close to the strut cap area. It could be bad.
Next would be transmission shift solenoid, dirty tranny fluid (when's last time you changed[well on these cars you just kind of drain what will, and then measure exact what came out and replace.] Versus actually flushing the transmission, which I lve heard horrible stories about.
Last,lly, internals if transmission/rebuild it
