Can a dirty air filter trigger service engine light code P0420?
The service engine soon light came on, the computer listed code P0420 which says that the catalyst system efficiency for bank 1 is below threshold for the current engine operating conditions. In the meatime, I checked the air filter which was very dirty, as soon as I replaced it the engine performance improved right away. Could the air filter be the problem?

Also, how can I erase the code to get rid of the service engine soon light on the dash? Should I unplug the battery?

Thanks,
Mike

Unplugging the battery most likely will not work. There is a thread somewhere on how to reset the ecu, shouldn't be hard to find if you do a search ;)
Or you could always get a cheap code puller off ebay, although i don't know how well they work. They go for about 20-50$

clearing the ECM can also be accomplished by leaving the positive terminal off for more than 24 hours; however, for most of us this is unfeasible.

The other way to clear it is to turn the key to the ON position, turn the screw on the ECM all the way clockwise, hold for at least 2 seconds, then turn all the way counter-clockwise, then turn the key OFF. I think this is how you do it. Look around just to be sure.

Air filter could have caused it to run to rich and damage the cat converter , causing the light to come on , but a dirty filter in itself will not cause a cat conv code !!
