Unplugging the battery most likely will not work. There is a thread somewhere on how to reset the ecu, shouldn't be hard to find if you do a search
Or you could always get a cheap code puller off ebay, although i don't know how well they work. They go for about 20-50$

 

If you drive the car every day, the light will go off in about a week if there's no problem. The service manual says three "trips," but their idea of a trip is pretty specific.

clearing the ECM can also be accomplished by leaving the positive terminal off for more than 24 hours; however, for most of us this is unfeasible.

The other way to clear it is to turn the key to the ON position, turn the screw on the ECM all the way clockwise, hold for at least 2 seconds, then turn all the way counter-clockwise, then turn the key OFF. I think this is how you do it. Look around just to be sure.

Air filter could have caused it to run to rich and damage the cat converter , causing the light to come on , but a dirty filter in itself will not cause a cat conv code !!

 

oh so a dirty filter can kill the cat??? So that would explain my backfiring issue. :-x
