here is a copy of a review i wrote for eopinions.com.

Pros: nice accelaration, solid reliability, value, nice interior finish/equipment, nice overdrive system, great braking

Cons: turning radius, velour seats, small rear entry/seating, bumper caps prone to fading/chipping

The Bottom Line: Highly dependable. Fun to drive while not the prettiest creature alive. Comfortable for compact car. Good accelaration, smooth operation. Poor turning radius, marginal fuel economy, minimal design flaws. Excellent value.

Recommended: Yes

Having sold Nissan marine products for many years, I came to love Nissan's performance and reliability. In early 1999, I purchased a used (clean) Nissan Altima GXE. I bought it from a reputable local car dealer and purchased a 4 year extended warranty for $1200.00 The car had a window price of $12,995, but drove it off the lot after three days of negotiation for $10,000 even.

I don't baby this car, but I don't abuse it either. I maintain it well only missing a couple Nissan suggested service schedules that I feel are probably a profit pitch for the local dealer. I change the oil religiously every 3000 miles and have a system check performed every 6 months or so. I maintain the exterior finish with a teflon polish which keeps a showroom shine on my Alty.

I love the acceleration the 150hp powerhouse allows. Some may say this car is sluggish, I simply can't see how... if you know how to drive, there is plenty of power to unleash. (note: all this even with an auto transmission). The engine is both smooth and responsive. There is next to no vibration when idling. Engine noise is minimal for the most part unless you start tapping on 5-6K rpms. Smooth transmission shifting especially when advancing into the two-stage overdrive lockup. This may take some people some time to get used to, but once you do it becomes one smooth running system. My g/f drives a standard (SAAB) and drives ME nuts when she drives my car. I don't particularly care for the fuel economy of my Nissan. It certainly doesn't break any efficiency records, that’s for sure. I average about 19-21 mpg. That’s a nice mixture of highway/city driving and I'll admit I like to ride all 150 horses from time to time. The best part about my car - it's both dependable and reliable. This car has me spoiled to death. During the three years I've owned this car I've replaced a $9 air filter and a $50 battery (just recently replaced). Both maintenance items probably not worth mentioning but it's ALL I’ve done to this vehicle. I get excited just thinking about it having finally escaped an on-going Buick nightmare. Besides my g/f's SAAB forces me to appreciate my Nissan repair history. If it wasn't for her SAAB we'd be in that three story house in the nice rich-folk neighborhood on the other side of town with the in ground pool and sauna. I'm delighted to say I wasted $1200 bucks on an extended warranty and emergency towing plan that I've never had to use. Something that most people don't think about how easy it is to wash a car. The Nissan Altima's design must make it the easiest car to wash/wax. Some things you're gonna strongly dislike: poor drink holder design (small and blocks radio controls - if you wanna visit the drive-thru don't supersize it and you might as well turn the radio off), velour seats that every particle on earth sticks to (break out the commercial vacum - I don't have a pet but can't imagine the nightmare putting one in this car would create), poor turning radius (it's more like a boat than a car in a parking lot - but you get used to it pretty quick), small rear entry and seating (don't put big momma in the backseat or you gonna have a big problem on your hands). If you can live with those minor flaws then you should not hesitate purchasing this vehicle. I'd recommend it to anyone.

UPDATE: currently at 64,500 miles and have recently replaced front brake pads and rotors. ($200)

Somone I work with has a newer G20, and she is always at the dealer with it. She enjoys when it breaks down though cause she gets a loaner Maxima imposter (I30).

just telling him would have taken just as long to type. 99% of the stuff in this forum has been discussed before so why doesnt everyone just type "search" as the 2nd post on every topic. people talk about how sick they are of hearing about altezzas. im just as sick of seeing the word "search" on every damn topic. even if u search, so much stuff comes up that it doesnt really help that much.

i have a 95 altima in mint condition with 46k miles, leather int, kenwood all around, white face gauges, PR cai, UR underdrive pulley, eibach prokits, (soon to be new michelins w/kyb's all around), 2 1/4 inch custom exhaust w/ Dynomax turbo muffler, front STB, NGK wires, 2000 SE rims.

asking 6500 even.

I have a manual, and get 28-33 mpg regardless of how I drive it. I'm currently driving mostly highway. I think this is pretty good, for a car with decent power. I have no experience with automatics.

agreed.

agreed. cup holders are off limits in my car, the lids spill directly into my cd player. This is a pretty common design flaw, though, unless you are looking at newer vehicles.

Add small glove compartment and non-fold down rear seats in my 96, and you've got my complaint list. All have been very minor inconveniences to me.

My bottom line: fun to drive compact 4-door with decent power and excellent reliability. small enough to feel sporty on back roads, large enough for 4 adults on longer trips. front wheel drive for winter weather. low resale value means used models are priced well below competition.

LOL @ Steve.... You just have to put a plug in for your car :)

Pro: Good value for the money, power windows, locks, steering, brakes, OD, 150 HP engine in the GXE model. Limited inexpensive aftermarket stuff you can buy on ebay (spoilers, wai, knobs, mufflers, etc.) The only major part that I've replaced is the alternator for $260 including labor.

Cons: Useless glove compartment

The older G20 aren't as good looking as the later models

If I have a later G20 model, then I would keep it.

I was looking for a 1st gen G20 after our 93 Altima GXE 5sp (see mods in sig) was involved in a hit and run. We couldn't locate any 5sp G20s in good condition and near 100k. We bought a 97 Sentra GXE Auto, which sucked nut with the 1.6l. Sold that yesterday and bought a 95 Altima SE 5sp a week ago.

Pro: roomy. good power in the low range (my 93 Max SE 5sp won't pull till midrange). very fun to toss around (max is a slug. sentra was pretty good). lasts forever. we had 156k on the 93 and only major repair was starter at 105k and clutch at 140k. interior lasts forever (nothing rattles or falls apart)

Con: no respect. no mods. so so braking w/drums (the 95 se has disc/disc and abs...stops like a mofo).

If you don't like the g20, the altima's a good choice. check your ins though. 93 Altima to 97 sentra was $150. From 97 Sentra to 95 Altima was another $200. Ins said the sentra was newer than the 93 and the 95 is a higher class than the sentra. Weird, cuz the 97 kbb higher than the 95.

I have a 98 (same engine as the 93 basiclly) and i have 92k on her with no major problems yet *knock on wood*. And yes, i push the car alot. But alot of those 92k are highway miles. So yes, this car is VERY reliable.

Keep the G20 and SR20DET it !!!!! It is a direct bolt in !!!! My brothers 93 G20 ran 13 flat in the quarter with just a BB SR20DET , 3" exhaust at 13 lbs boost .... There are way more performance parts for the SR20DE ... If you are looking for the cheepest way to go fast the G20 is the way to go ... But From driving them both , the Altima handles better , and seems to drive better ( more predictable ) .. Personaly I like the looks of the 1st gen , but the G20 looks good after the 99 fromt bumber is added and a nice set of wheels ... I will post picts of my brother car tonight !!!! They are both very nice modable cars ... And they both have the same T-chain and injector problems .... The G20 is more of a luxury car , but in my opinion my Altima looks juat as nice inside as the G20 .. ( becides the G20 having leather if thats what you lke , but you can get an Altima with leather !! )

I have a 5spd. and also have only run 14.6..... ( well untill Sun. !! )
