Rattles / Tapping Noise

I tried posting to other threads over the last 12+ months but have not gotten the kind of response I've needed.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but the back of my car still rattles when I hit slight dips in the road. I'd take my car in to a shop tomorrow if someone could tell me what the cause was. Tonight I'm going to try and record it and post it up for you. Here's what I've done:

-Had a friend ride in the back, halfway in the trunk while I drove around to try to pinpoint the noise.
-Noticed it around the time I got my rear deck speakers replaced. However from what I can see everything is pretty secure and most of the weight is pushing downward.
-Took it to the audio shop where my speakers were installed. They heard the noise, but don't see what is causing it.
-Took it to a shop run by a guy who frequents nycmaximas.org. He heard it too, but didn't see anything that could cause the tapping.
-Complained about the noise on over five different dealership visits at two different dealerships (Habberstad and Garden City [where I left because I waited 45 min and they didn't even take down my info]). They were even supposed to have a Nissan Master Technician look at it, but it never happened. Upon subsequent visits, they blamed my aftermarket audio system. They confirmed there were no issues with the suspension or the exhaust system.

I have thought about getting Dynamat, etc. to insulate things so I don't have to hear it. However, I have concerns about how it holds up to heat / cold, not to mention the expense. Also it's not addressing the true cause of the problem.

On 3rd gens there was a recall about the subframe cracking. I doubt this would be the problem on a brand new car. I don't believe it's a major safety issue, but still annoying nonetheless.

Instead of Dynamyte look into Second Skin and Raammat. Raammat now has a nice sale for their best product BXT 2 as well as "floor only" stuff. Check out those sites, way cheaper AND better then dynamyte from what i hear. Heat/cold is not an issue if installed correctly.

This will not fix your problem since seems like u got a LOT of rattles from all over the car but after tracking my rattles (i bought Second Skin and Raammat, so decided to do a little investigation on where i should apply it the most) the BIGGEST rattle causing thing in the "trunk area" is a trunk light. In the matter of fact nothing else is rattling even when my sub is all the way up exept for that light. Tape it up, tape up rear deck's edges where the light is or even get rid of it alltogether and install some other light source (led strips...)

As i said i'm sure it's far not the only thing in YOUR car but i'm sure it's a huge contributer.

I took the third brake light out when my spoiler was added. The cable is there, but the actual plastic piece has been removed.

I'm not talking about 3rd brake light, i'm talking about TRUNK light. One that lights up the trunk when u open it.

One way to find out for sure is to take rear deck cover off. If any rattles disaper - u know it's the cover itself. While there's no cover u'll be able to track down at least some of the rattles (incl trunk light i'm talking about)
Also might wanna check seatbelts while cover is off. It was one of main reason for rattles in one of the previous (forgot exactly which one) gen Maxima.

Once again getting sound deadener material will def help some. Check out Second Skin and Raammat. Will also help you get better, cleaner sound reaching your ears.

I too have the most annoying rattle/tapping sound that I can't track down. Mine seems to occur when turning at slow speeds and sounds to be either under the headliner or somewhere on the passenger side. I have gone as far as removing the entire headliner out of my car and pass. side door panel and driving around and I still can't track it down. It is the most annoying thing! I would describe it as metal on metal or two marbles hitting each other, and again it is only at slow speeds! WTF! It is not the seatbelt against the plastic, and not the glovebox. I banged on everything and shook everything i could and got nothing! HELP! I would trade it in, but I would end up losing so much $:banghead:

I have the exact samething from time to time. I thought for sure at one point it was the glove box, but I have slammed it shut so many times and its not that. The i thought it was the sunglasses holder.....nope. It sounds like its coming from under the dash somewhere.

And then I have a REALLY annoying squeak coming from what sounds like the rear deck when I go over bumpy roads, and it does it more frequently when its cold.

But I have come to realize that with SO MANY parts that make up a cars, any cars interior, theres a chance for rattles in any car, so I don't let it bother me too much.

I've had that dash rattle since I got my coupe, on Christmas day I noticed some water dripping from under the center console after I took it through an automatic car wash, so I'm assuming the windshield has come unsealed at the bottom in the middle somewhere. It's at the dealership today so they can find the source of the leak. If it is the windshield hopefully they will seal it up and hopefully that will stop the tapping noise it has always had. I'll keep you updated if they do anything.

Captures issue with my Xenons not firing up and me playing with the trunk light as Vital suggested, but not the noise I wanted. :/ The more I think about it, the more I realize this vid is a waste of time: :/

For the record i'm one of the lucky few that don't really get all that crazy rattles some people mentioned. Even with my aftermarket sound system (incl sub) my car is still pretty decent when it comes to rattles.
But here's a list of rattles/noises i've been able to track down.

1. Trunk light. Pretty much covered in above posts. Instead of trying to fix it i'm just gonna get rid of it alltogether. I've added couple's dome light assembly to the "open" space of my trunk (not blocked by sub) and will do some fancy led strips later on.

2. Factory plastic wire clips/zip ties/holders whatever u wanna call them. A lot of them aren't very tight and create rattling noise. There's different ways to fix it depending on location and surroundings of those clips. Electrical tape around the bottom part of the clip itself, duct tape around the wire or on the edges of the "hole" (often it's square, sometimes round). In order to track them down u'll need to take plastic covers off so u could see and touch them them. Rear deck cover, doors panels, glovebox....

3. Your own THINGS in cupholder, armrest cubby, glovebox, "sunglass" holder, doors.. The only way to get rid of them is obviously to take EVERYTHING out.

4. Driver's side seatbelt. It's not constant but once in a while i get this whinning noise as i move my left shoulder and/or seltbelt itlsef. I forgot all about it but this morning it happened again. Not really sure how to fix it but it's def seatbelt rubbing on that plastic holder between the doors.

5. And the winner of "The most annoying rattle" is......... a freaking lighter inside my air ducts. I'm sure it will not apply to anyone here (most people at least lol) but i had this crazy rattle eveytime i hit a bump or uneven road coming somewhere from center console, cubby hole area. I even took my center console out to track it down but rattle was still SOMEWHERE there. After many attempts and lots of time taking things apart i gave up on. Untill one day when i was running ducts for the rear seats vents (my car didn't come with it, had to "mod" it) and had to take a piece running from the unit itself to the floor i noticed A FUKKING LIGHTER AND SOME HANGER-TYPE CLIPinside it!! WTF????? I know it's not MY lighter cuz all of mines are either black or green. The only assumption that makes sense to me is that service guy at Nissan dropped it there since my car had 1 service where it was taken apart. I'll be dammed if it came like this from the factory.
Image

It was inside of this duct. WTF????????

A good solution to a lot of these rattles is sound deadening. Even if u don't have crazy sound system shaking your car up it'll help with most (if not all if done right) rattles.

Well I guess if we dont want our cars to loosen up, we gotta get an Infiniti. LOL. I was reading the Long-Term test on the FX50 that Insideline has in their fleet and they noted that the car still had that tight new feeling with no rattles and creaks, which they said most cars do after a while. I think thats what were seeing here. Like I said I expect it with any car. Long as I can turn the radio up and not hear them Im good. But every once in a while Ill listen to see if something new has popped up. The one I can't cover up with the radio is the rattle I have coming from either the driver door weather stripping or the seat belt assembly, thats right in my dam ear.

Hey Vital. How do you pull the trunk light out? I was driving around earlier and the noise was louder than ever. I tried yanking on the plastic piece in 20 degree weather and it wouldn't budge. Still have a feeling the noise is coming from somewhere else. Definitely will have another video up tomorrow.

The easiest way is when rear deck cover removed. Which in itself isn't the quickest and easiest way LOL.

The only other way i can think of is to get inside the trunk under that ligth and give it a shot by pulling a clip or two out of the way. Not sure if it'll work without breaking the light or clips thou

If the noise is coming from the Rear Deck, the rattle could to be caused by the (4) plastic covers (that cover the seat release and metal anchors). There is a piece of felt glued underneath the cover, however, that does not seem to work. I bought a sheet of thin black foam, at a craft store. Cut the foam to fit under each cover and that seems to have cured the deck rattle.

Damm that must be pissin annoying.... I can barley hear it in the video but I am sure in real life the sound must be lounder... Good luck fixing it.

Yeah it's very annoying. That audio was recorded with my little canon powershot sd700 camera containing a very small microphone.

Yeah some rattles can be very annoying. I also have a knocking sound that comes from somewhere in back..it sounds like it's in the rear passenger C-pillar, or in the passenger side suspension. It is a clear sound of metal knocking against metal. I have a 2008 3.5 SE, no mods. When it's real cold like it's been lately (12 deg out), I don't hear it, and when it's about 50 deg or so, I don't hear it. But within that outside temp range I hear it.

You almost have to have someone ride with you, and pinpoint the location of the noise. Noises and rattles in a car can be weird and deceptive. You may think you have it pinpointed but the reflective nature of a car's interior can throw off your ability to pinpoint the noise from the driver's seat.

I recently had a massive, loud, super annoying rattle coming from the passenger side door. Well, it sounded like the door, but it was in fact the glove box. Specifically, it was from where the glove box latch meets the frame outside the glove box (the far right side of the glovebox). I took 1/8" adhesive weatherstripped available at any hardware store, cut it down to 1/16" thickness, and wrapped it around the spring loaded latch that holds the glovebox up when it's closed. Completely solved the rattle. The weird thing is in the car it totally sounded like it was coming from the center of the psgr. door.

The Altima, at least with the 3.5SE suspension, can have a fair amt of rattles on choppy roads. The 3.5SE in my opinion has an extremely firm suspension..very little damping. I have been in cars than handle as well or better, but are much better at damping out smaller road irregularites. I drove a 2.5S and it was completeley different.. the smaller wheels and softer springs made for a great ride. I guess I'm old and need a Buick

good news is that as well as it being your opinion, its also fact. The 3.5SE has the sport suspension and rides much rougher than the SL suspension.

Fixed one yesterday that had been bugging me for a while - the recline mechanism in my passenger seat was rattling. 10 minutes of work at lunchtime and it is gone now. Took off the side panel from the seat, lined it with closed cell foam (most of the time was spent waiting for the contact cement to set up). Put a few dabs of grease on the mechanism linkage before I reinstalled the panel. All is good now.

Hey RealMac, not sure if you're still having this problem, but it sounds like it might be a problem that I had on my car for awhile. I've quoted Vital below because he's got a picture that shows it well.

I was putting in my hockey gear in the trunk one night, and suddenly I had a new rattle. Took a couple days to track down, but what happened is the little plastic clip that holds the two cross-bars on the underside of the trunk came off, so the bars were rattling against each other. It's hard to describe, but it's the two bars that go right through the top third of this picture. And in fact, it even looks like the clip in this picture (just to the left of center) has come off one of the bars. Both the cross bars should clip right into the plastic piece which keeps them from rattling against each other.

If someone was doing work on the rear of the car (for speakers, whatever), I could easily see that getting knocked loose.

No update yet. I think it might be the back right speaker even though it looks secure. Just a hunch though. I should meet up with Vital one day and have him check it out. I don't have a garage and It's been too cold for me to remove the light. :p
