The 1st & 2nd Genners have a thread like this in their forum and it has turned out to be very popular and successful. This will be an ongoing discussion thread for 3rd Gen shop-talk and chatting.

No flaming. No noob questions. No politics, sports, etc. (take that stuff to Off-Topic). Just Nissan enthusiasts coming together and talking shop.

I'll start:

So my alternator went out unexpectedly a few days ago. It also killed my battery so I had to replace that too. Great. I didn't realize how much an alternator + labor was going to cost. Nissan dealer wanted $750(!?), and that didn't include a new battery. Plus, I had to wait at least a few days for the alternator to be shipped in from Sacramento. The day it happened, the AAA tow truck driver recommended a local AAA approved shop. I had to make a decision on the fly so I went with his recommendation. Local shop ended up doing everything -including a new battery- for $500, and I was out of there in less than 24 hours.

Gotta love unexpected car issues that put a nice little dent in the wallet.

Finished sanding the SE-R bumper down the primer. Waiting on the painting supplies to arrive.

Finished sanding the second layer of kitty hair on the grille. It's getting there.

Finished rewiring the gauges for the car. The nitrous will be going back in after it's rewire in about a week. Waiting on another distribution block and a new nitrous express switch panel so I can avoid using those toggle switch type covers. I should take a picture of the rat's nest I pulled out. Kind of strange how it started out as a base nitrous kit and then I added on one thing, then another and it all became this web of confusion. Not any more!!

I've made the decision to go back to the 350Z intake manifold and will be using a spacer to add more intake volume for added power. I will also be doing the MREV modification which has shown to help on the 350Z boards. Only problem with this is I'm going to have to hack up the hood. I've found a scoop that will look inconspicuous enough to not give anything away.. but not entirely ruin the flow of the entire car.

Should look good painted and on the car. Will be ordering it soon for test fitments.

I'm keeping the sills black. Going to be painting the front bumper along with the rear and doing that "black out lower grille" modification. It should tie in really well with everything else.

Now I just need to find a good deal on some more AN lines and fittings and I will be mounting my new second bottle. Should be interesting.

The funnel for the coolant stuff is coming tomorrow. Will be replacing my thermostat and fluids then. Fun times!

Wow.. long list.

I need to detail mine as well. Maybe this weekend I'll get to it. Right now the only things that I'm waiting to get done are a pulley and tune. I finally retrieved my ECU code on Sat and didn't find it on UPREV's matrix. So hopefully they'll be able to take care of it and I'll be done until I can get cams etc..

So I've been trying to fab up a "scoop" for my Berk. Here's the concept - which I had installed but it got ripped off in some road work - with no resonation boxes installed, there's the hole that leads to the fender well area where a CAI would sit. I took some house ventilation tubing (the rigid stuff) and ran it down to the fender well liner. On the liner, I installed one of those dryer ducts that you stick on the outside of the house. This one was steel and I had the open end facing the front of the car so I would get a "ram air" effect and hopefully feed cooler air into the engine bay. My theory was that I would give cooler air to the intake while avoiding the water hazards of a CAI. I planned on making a wall to separate the WAI from the rest of the engine. Without the separation wall, it seemed to work well, but then I discovered some ground clearance issues the hard way. Tore out the entire liner and demolished the ductwork. Starting over...

Any ideas for improvement? Remember, this is a concept so it's ugly now, but hopefully in the future it'll be pretty and very functional.

Where are the pics?

My ac just went out, I'm assuming I need a recharge.

On a seperate note, as some of you may or may or may not know, my car is throwing p1402, I thought my Pre cats were deteriorating, but when I put my springs on, my buddy got under the car to look at the precats and said there was a wire he jiggled? The next day my SES light didn't come on, and ever since then it comes on some times and stays off other times, is the code just a lose wire or a bad censor? As I said before when I took the EGR apart there were no metal flakes in it, so now I'm thinking it's that wire

Still interested. But moving forward with other projects until you can give me a number.

^^^ I thought about doing something along those lines. Except I don't have fogs so I was thinking of running some sort of flexible tubing from the fog light opening up to the air filter. Just something to bring more cooler fresh air right next to the air filter. Doubt it would do much but couldn't hurt.

Something like this

I tried to figure out a way to do that too but didn't want to lose a fog. Thought I could use the lower grill area, but there's not really a bunch of room there to make a smooth flow.

yeah i would NOT use that stuff....id use pvc before i used that....the trick to intake's is keeping the lines smooth, no sharp bend's or anything....otherwise it causes turbulance and loses its efficency....at the end of the day you could reverse engineer the intake....

and this is coming from the guy who's built exhausts out of 3" fence post's :wall:
I might try pvc also, except for the inlet. A round pvc opening would be too low for any type of regular clearance, but the 90 degree bend would be a lot smoother.

lol peng, if you actually bought/ordered that case of CM Tattoo I am revoking your man card.
I think I got that box from a neighbor...If I remember right. Even if I did buy it...I wouldn't admit it!

I'm not too worried about how smooth it is or the bends since it isn't actually part of the intake tract. Just something to force some cooler air into the engine bay. That stuff is flexible but very rigid and keeps it's shape and that's what I'm after. Something easy to manipulate and install and remove whenever I need to.

Why I have bought CM tattoo before.....the wife loves that stuff :wall:

Uh oh getting off-topic..... Has anyone used the meguiars headlight restoration kit before? The one that comes with a buffing pad that attaches to a drill. And no I will not try wet sanding because I know for sure I would FUBAR my headlights.

I'm coming to say hi to everyone here, I just got a 05 Altima SE-R, like it very much so far... but I haven't got any remote for it and in my opinion my key is not stock as well, I'm looking to buy a remote for it, or maybe a "flip" key, any suggestion here? or any body can show me what kind remote I should buy? Since I never seen which remote is stock.
Thanks

Just finished replacing the thermostat (Well 45 minutes ago) and now bleeding the system of air pocket. It's still blowing lukewarm at idle, but nothing is leaking. Oh well. Also received my nitrous express switch panel. They're a lot larger then the OEM ones, so I will have to find somewhere else to mount them but they replace all four of my switches which makes its a TON easier.

Polishing headlights: I just use Plastix with a Mothers Ball and a high speed drill. My headlights are original and look very good IMO.

Flex Pipe for Intake: My Weapon-R intake kit came with some 3" flex/accordian plastic piping that can be used to create a cold air intake or just a tube bringing in colder air from down around the bumper/fog light. Sounds like a winter project in the garage.

Detailing: No water on my car (except some rain) since the end of last winter. I only use quick detail products except to remove road dirt and salt during the winter.

New Projects? Are the NWP spacers worth doing? 92,000 miles so a tuneup is in order this winter. I want a redtop battery, Nismo radiator and oil caps, upgrade the brakes so the the rusty rotors are history.

Do not get the Nismo radiator cap because it's increase in system pressure is too much for stock.. Almost all of Nissan's have reported problems using it.

Just ordered 2 new CV axles. Gonna replace them as soon as they get in. Was doing an oil change tonight and saw think grease everywhere. i laughed it off as I found the tear in the pass. side boot because I have been wanting to replace them for a while. I used this as an excuse to "get" the wife's buy in. You know how the extention shaft gets all rusty looking? Would it be ok if i painted it with ceramic based paint, like caliper paint to help prevent the ugliness from returning. ( i know enough to mask off the splines etc....ha ha ha. :)

does anybody have any videos of what te timing chain whine sounds like? I have 120k on the odo and am getting paranoid, although I suspect that some of the noise is coming from my noisy injectors that have been noisy since day 1

Just as an FYI to everyone, don't open your radiator cap after running the car, even if for JUST a short time. I found that my overflow tank went from "FULL" to completely empty over the course of the night. I'm baffled since I checked everywhere around the car this morning and found no drips or leaks. And to have it all go away so quickly over night.. yeah, hard to believe. So I started up the car for a second to go to work but got the idea to check my coolant in the radiator. Turn off the car, go to the radiator, pop it open and GOOOOOSH! goes coolant. Sigh. What a mess. Well at least my radiator was still full. I'm guessing there was probably still some minor pockets of air in the system and it kind of use the overflow tank as a means of getting that coolant. Filled it up just now and will be watching it like a hawk. >.>'

coolant is some slick shit too. I remember doing my header install on a slick concrete floor and then taking off the top radiator hose only to have what seemed like 2 gallons of coolant hit the floor and make a slick mess for me to work in.....hahaha loser:hahano:
