Continuous beep on opening driver door, everything off

Hello resident gurus and Altima geniuses,

My '07 2.5SL with 40K km on the odometer has had absolutely no problems until a few days ago. After I power off the car, a continuous beep/sound is heard when I open the driver door and stops when I close it. It sounds again once the door is opened and stops when it's shut. This has never happened before. It doesn't happen with any other car door, just the driver side.

I can't figure out what's causing it. I tried locking and unlocking the doors with the intelligent key, but it still makes that continuous sound when I open the driver door. The very first time it happened, I sat in my car and opened the manual to see if I could troubleshoot it. After about 5-10 minutes, I reopened the door and no sound (the issue appeared to resolve itself).

The next time 3 times I turned my car off, I couldn't wait around to see if the sound would stop, but like clockwork, it would sound only when the door was open.

Not sure if this is relevant, but I live in the northeastern part of continental North America, so there's been lots of snow. I haven't washed the Altima in a while and I've been doing a fair bit of skidding around.

If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them! Thanks.

Ralan07, xeene, hazmat: thanks for the ideas.

hazmat: appreciate the link. I'll try turning off the auto headlights and see if this fixes anything.

I drained the battery leaving the car in acc mode as a n00b because I didn't know the beeping was coming from my car! The Altima has been so low maintenance that any little hiccup has me up in arms, lol.

Actually, I think not putting it in Park will result in a continuous high pitch ring instead of a constant beep. But only after you close the door and the key is outside the car. It tripped me out when it happened to me once.

Reading your event again about when you waited while reading the User's Manual and the sound didn't happen, is the sound you are referring to the triple beep then pause triple beep then pause? If so, after you open the front door and with it still open try opening the back door and see if you hear the steering wheel locking mechanism and the beeping will stop. I think it has something to do with the security. Just a though?

I'm guessing you are from Canada with the km readings... I too have this noise, our cars have daytime running lights unlike the US models, I keep my light switch in "auto" and it sounds like you've said. I think the Canadian models will sound when in auto for some reason, but its not an issue because the headlights turn off when you leave the vehicle.

But that being said, it is odd that you just noticed this... did you just start using the "auto" feature by chance?

It may help if you could take a video of it and post it. Does the LCD screen display a key when it is beeping? Sometimes mine does this and it's trying to tell me that the key is still either in the key fob port or in the car. Maybe it's the same thing that's happening for you and you haven't noticed it before?

jdublup, tt85_GM, nismo9132 you guys rock so hard.

Luckily it'll make up for my lack of amazingness as I tell you this story with a red face:

I mounted my GPS near the driver's side A pillar of the windshield, while it was plugged into the outlet inside the center console. The power cord trailing down and across my lap nudged my turn signal on, giving me an opportunity to investigate my headlamp dial, which is usually on auto.

I guess the last time I mounted my GPS it rotated the headlamp setting because IT WAS ON RUNNING DAYLIGHTS INSTEAD OF AUTO.

LOL omg, after some very horrified troubleshooting, it was indeed the daylights that were causing the continuous tone. I am so glad my battery never died in the week it took me to figure this out! Nissan design > layperson drivers once again. :eek:wned:

Thank you again for all the help and constructive comments!

From the 2007 Nissan Altima Owners Manual, page 2-15, Instruments and Controls

Light reminder chime

With the ignition switch in the OFF position, a chime sounds when the driver’s door is opened if the headlights or parking lights are on. Turn the headlight control switch off before leaving the vehicle.

Quoth the owner's manual, chapter 2, verse 15, "and lo. An chime shall ringeth whenst when the driver’s door is opened if the headlights or parking lights are on". So sayeth the holy book. Amen.

Thy car will also protesteth, lest thy attempt a locking ceremony whilst leaving thy keys, or those of thine partner, inside....

Quoth the book, evermore... (god i love this antiquity type of speech!!)

I leave my keys clipped to my side except when I'm charging the fob. I can open the door if it starts beeping I close it it stops and open it again it don't beep
Charging the fob? must be an aftermarket unit. Viper remote start or something?

I mean, hat thou a unit of superior functionality and quality? Thou hast broken the third commandment of the Nissan bible! "Thou shalt not modify thine chariot." Tisk tisk, shameful indeed!! (the last part is totally a joke!! :) )

Had this happen in a rental I’m driving and it was driving me nuts. No pun intended. Googled and here I am. I FIGURED IT OUT!!! When I was shutting the vehicle off I wasn’t returning the ignition position all the way to “0” just felt the engine stop and pulled the key out. Thus the constant beep-beep-beep-beep Pause beep-beep-beep-beep Pause.

If you look at the ignition there’s 4 positions: 0,1,2,3.

When you turn the vehicle off be sure to rotate the key all the way back (counterclockwise) until it stops and thus leaves it in the “0” position. Really stupid how simple this is but man it was making me crazy.

Recently I have had the same issue with my 98 Honda Civic. Constant beeping once engine is turned off and driver door is open, regardless of if key is in ignition or not. If driver door is open while engine is off beep beep beep. I just replaced the cylinder ignition lock in the steering column. And I don't think I got the little annoying beep signal thingy set right in the cylinder lock. I was replacing the cylinder lock due to randomly my car wont crank. After I return the key over and sometimes turn the wheel left and right and every now and then bang on the wheel it eventually starts right up like nothing ever happened. Battery is holding 12+V brand new started, brand new main relay and unattached, cleaned, and reattached engine grounds. Michael Cordell
