Factory spoiler and 3rd brake light?

Just picked up my wife's '13 SV today. It came with the factory installed spoiler (not dealer) and noticed the 3rd brake light is also in the car and functional. We had two previous Altima's with factory spoilers and there was no 3rd brake light assembly in the car. Anyone else notice this? Does Nissan make a cover/plug so you can remove the light?

*Update: I called the dealer and they said no block-off cover is offered for the '13. I drove to the dealership and looked at others on the lot with spoilers and they all have the 3rd brake light also too......very strange.

I know that this is a little late to the party seeing the post date on your msg, but I just got that spoiler from ebay. Took like 3 days from to get to me in NJ after paying and I gotta say the paint and finish are great and it installed easily. I did however have my buddy who owns an auto shop do it for me but I did so some standing and supervising. Took about 45 minutes and looks great. Took it to the dealer for something and my sales guy was like, I didn't know we got the spoiler on that for you. Lol...the only thing I haven't done yet is wire up the break light in the spoiler. My sales guy did say that the cabin light remains wired so far on the 13's with the spoiler so...there it is. Hope this helps!

Thank you sir. And to co-sign a previous statement you made, the light bar in the spoiler is most definitely LED. Spoiler came shipped in 2 parts. 2 screws were supplied to attach the LED strip and then just attach to the rear decklid and wire that sucker up. Still have to wire it though. Found the instructions/schematic on Nissan Tech so hopefully they're accurate even for a non factory part. We shall see...fingers crossed.:eek:hnoes:

Brake light wired up!

Finally got the brake light wired up!! It's about damn time, took some adjusting since I couldn't find an extra plug and play male harness, so I had to solder up some connectors from Radio Shack but it works great and now all 4 of the brake lights work. According to the dealership when they do the spoiler at the factory or dealership, at least on the 2013 Altima they leave the cabin brake light in so 4 lights no big deal. Here's a quick YouTube vid to show the lights...

I just installed a rear spoiler with led lights on a maxima, but cannot get the led wires to fish through the existing rubber wiring protector in between the trunk lid and the trunk body. I noticed that someone mentioned something about splicing the wires at the license plate light wiring? is that what you did?

thank you

eBay spoiler vendor

Hey!! I got the spoiler from Auto Spoilers And Trim on eBay. It was like $100 shipped. Arrived to me in like 3 days too. Think they are located in Florida and I'm in NJ. For the money you CAN'T beat it. Hope that helps!

Here's a link to the item (mods if this isn't allow please just delete. Thanks!)

Resurrecting an old thread when I did a Google search on how to remove/disconnect the third brake light in the rear window after having the spoiler installed.

I have a 2015 Altima SL and finally purchased the OEM rear decklid spoiler. I got it on sale from Nissan's eStore for $292. I don't do aftermarket knock-off spoilers. They are cheap for a reason. They are not made to OEM standards so they do not always fit properly, the paint is done cheap so it typically does not last, and sometimes does not match the OEM paint. The LED brake light in an aftermarket spoiler is typically a cheap part that will either burn out prematurely, or the LED lamps will lose their brightness and barely light up after a few months or years. They usually never include the factory connector to plug into the factory harness for the LED brake light, which means you have to cut into the factory wiring. But if you only spend $100, you get what you pay for. I would rather have the spoiler last the lifetime of the vehicle. I got lucky too...my dealer is so good, they only charged me $57 to install the spoiler. He gave me a deal and only charged me for 30 minutes of labor when the spoiler is typically one hour. With drilling, sealing, rust protection, wiring, adhesive...I would rather leave that up to the experts since they install spoilers all the time on vehicles.

So back to the topic at hand...the high mount brake light in the rear window. According to the OEM installation instructions for the rear decklid spoiler, Nissan leaves the rear window brake light plugged in, even though the spoiler includes the integrated LED brake light to replace the rear window brake light. FYI, as stated by others, the rear window brake light is an LED assembly with four LED lamps inside. There are no bulbs to remove, but very easy to unplug. The OEM spoiler plugs into an existing factory connector underneath the interior trim cover in the truck lid. So you can unplug the rear window brake light without affecting the LED brake light in the spoiler. In my opinion, the rear window brake light should be disconnected when the rear spoiler with integrated LED brake light is installed. It looks totally stupid, and cheap, when the rear window brake light is connected with the spoiler installed. It screams out, "I installed an aftermarket spoiler and hacked in the brake light to make it work...so that is why my rear window light is still plugged in". I don't know why Nissan leaves it plugged in when other vehicle manufacturers disconnect the rear window brake light when the spoiler includes the integrated LED brake light. When I had a 2003 Accord Coupe, the OEM spoiler with integrated LED brake light actually plugged into the rear window brake light harness (disconnecting from the light bulb portion of the harness), forcing you to disconnect the rear window brake light. So whenever you saw an Accord Coupe from the 2003 to 2007 era with both rear window brake light and spoiler brake light illuminating, you knew they had a cheap aftermarket spoiler installed. It makes the car look cheap when both light up.

The rear window brake light is very easy to disconnect. Get into the back seat and push on the brake light housing with your two thumbs close to the rear deck, pushing towards the rear window. You will release the two tabs on the back of the brake light housing and it should pop up. Then you can pull it towards you, unhooking the two tab hooks close to the rear window glass. Pull up on the wiring from the rear deck and you will expose a harness connector. Unplug the rear brake light from this harness connector. You cannot unplug it from the LED assembly underneath the housing. It might look like a plug, but it appears to be a permanent connection at that point. I wrapped the exposed plastic plug with rubber tape so it would not rattle against the housing. I also covered both exposed connectors with electrical tape. Then I taped both wires together with electrical tape so neither connector would rattle in the rear deck, but they remain unplugged. Snap the brake light housing back into place and you are done. The LED in the spoiler will light up, but the rear window light will remain dark. Most people have tinted windows anyway, so the housing is not visible. Now the car won't look cheap with two high step mount brake lights. Before and after pics are included.

When you pulled the factory 3rd brake light up to unplug it, was it completely free from connection to the rear window deck? I'm asking because if it is, this would be a perfect place to do a mod and remove the 3rd brake lights and install a rear-view dash cam. Bonus: the video wouldn't be dark if you have tinted windows since the tint goes around the brake light housing.

It actually does not improve safety. You can google search that. Since the Center High Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) was implemented on all vehicles in 1986 and later, it was only most effective in 1987 when they were new, resulting in an 8.5% reduction in rear-end accidents. The long term effect, dropped that number to 4.3%. They hoped for higher numbers, but it never happened. They continue to be required because they are inexpensive to produce and install in a vehicle. Leaving the rear window CHMSL plugged in makes the spoiler look like a cheap aftermarket part, because the LED in the spoiler replaces the one in the rear window. But, if you like it plugged in, that's cool.

^^mmmmm the only reason I retrofitted the reverse cam was for tight parking manoeuvres, specifically seeing the entire bumper. With it mounted up there, you wouldn't see the first 20+ feet behind the car, which makes the cam pointless.

Now, as a location for a second, rear facing dashcam...you are spot on!

It took 3 years but I was finally able to find the part # to fill the hole when I removed the third break light. It turns out part 79910-3TA0A comes with the cap, I was able to convince a dealer to get it for me for free as part of another deal :). Sadly it requires the entire shelf to be purchases.

In case any one wants to try to track down the cap alone it is made by M-Tek, Inc for Nissan and has the following markings "9HMO* >PP-T15< Rear Cover". Nothing on it looks like a stand alone part #.
