Hi all, I am a new member. I have searched alot of this and other forums but have not found my answer or solution so I am posting here.

I have a 2009 Nissan Altima 2.5 s that I bought cheap ($350.00) and it is giving me the No Key detected light. The buttons on both of my fobs work to unlock the doors, open the trunk set off alarm ext. I replaced both batteries with named brand batteries just in case. The button on the door recognizes the fob as when it is pressed the doors lock and unlock. When the fob is inserted in the slot under the dash the car recognizes it and starts the car. When I bought it it had this issue. I am about 60 miles away from a dealer and would like to fix this myself if I can as I am trying to keep the cost of the car low so I can give it to a coworker who need a car very badly. I am wondering if it is the actual sensor (no idea where it is located) in the car and if that need replaced? If so, I have a parts car (that was rear ended) that I also bought that I could salvage the part off of at it worked before we switched out the motor and transmission. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated as I would like to get this project done and hand the car over.

So if I read this right...everything ultimately works, just the car won't start with the key in your pocket/purse...it has to be in slot?

Since the car starts, it would appear that the NVIS (immobilizer) system is happy with the key IDs.

There are 3 internal receiver antennas (the fourth, that accepts the remote unlock commands externally seems to be working?) If you cannot start the car without using the slot, then one or more of the internal antennas must not be functioning (they are all wired to the BCM...so if there is no issue with the antennas, the BCM is the next logical stop).

I assume you have the CVT sedan. Can you start the car with the fob near the receiver antenna, below the rear window deck, centered above the passthrough opening into the cabin? If so, it may just be a defective or disconnected antenna in the front of the car (one in the centre console, one in the shifter console). See images below.

If all 3 antenna are present, connected and appear OK (you could try replacing one)...and still no start unless the key slot is used, then there must be something wrong in the BCM that drives each of these antennas....and of course the BCM is a giant PITA to get to as it's located up behind the instrument cluster.

I think 'instrument panel removed' means 'dashbaord removed'

8. Remote keyless entry receiver (view with instrument panel removed)
9. Key slot
10. Instrument panel antenna (view with instrument panel removed)
11. Front console antenna (bottom view of console)
12. Rear parcel shelf antenna

8 is tucked up above the glove box to the right of the blower assy
10 is located on the bottom of the HVAC unit behind the radio/climate controls (I think)
11 is located inside the console between the front seats

Nothing needs doing in the shifter.

So just an update so far. After getting back from a week long vacation I worked on the car yesterday. I found where the antenna was suppose to be in the trunk area but it was not there, and someone had cut the plug off it and taped up the wires. I took the antenna and plug from the parts car that i have and soldered it back in. I put my key on the back panel just over the antenna and low and behold the car started. I then took the key and put in in the cup holder and no key detected. So it seems as my BCM is working just fine and I need to hunt for the other 2 antennas and see if they are even there. Thanks for your help. I will try to keep you all informed.

Thanks for the update ^^

At least we know now we're barking up the right tree!

You know, it occurs to me that this could have been done intentionally by the previous owner if they were the being victimized by one of those 301.5Mhz or 433Mhz keylogger gizmos that sniffs the key fob codes when you unlock your car wirelessly, and then allows the thief to 'replay' them at will...thereby unlocking your car at will and emptying it of whatever and whenever they feel like it. Where I live there have been a series of high end Lexus SUV stolen from driveways by doing just that...but IIRC the Nissan NVIS has a second set of codes for starting.

I know I'd probably do the same thing...rip out the antennas and just use the dash slot. Problem solved, thieves move on.

FIXED!!!
So I believe it was ultimately my fault why I had so much of a problem with it. When I got the car it was trashed inside, it had set for a year and was mildewed on the inside the last person to own it was a smoker and his kids destroyed the interior. My parts car had a much nicer interior (after a full detail) and included leather seats. I gutted the interior of the car I am fixing up removed everything including the carpet which was so bad I ended up burning it because I had no idea what was living in there. swapped everything over including the center console (here in the problem lies) even though I knew I was not going to run the wiring for the heated seats, it just looked so much better than what was in there. The plugs fit even though I noticed that the one coming from the center console had more wires, I just figured they were for the heated seats.
So just about at my whits end I took out the center console and dug the old one out of the parts car, where it was put, plugged it in (and before I checked it I also pulled my radio and HVAC controls to check the other antenna) Put my fob in the cup holder my foot on the brake said a little prayer hit the start button and it roared to life.
I am sad to see my saga with this car come to an end. I have completed everything I wanted to to it including a motor and transmission swap from a 2010 Altima, mine is an 09. And a front end swap 09 to 10 as someone hit a deer with the one I was fixing up. I don't believe that I could have figured everything out as soon or at all if it were not for these forums and the knowledgeable people behind them. Thank you so much for your help. And look forward to the next time.
