Power Steering Fluid - Nissan PSF vs ATF

So, as I get ready to re-rack my Altima...I wondered about the hydraulic fluid to be used...so I consulted the Owner's Manuals (yes plural, and yes a shout-out to ThrockMorton too). I also verified the OM's fluid page against the table which appears in the MA(intenance) sections of the respective FSMs.

Interesting factoid 1. From 2005 through 2009, genuine Nissan PSF is recommended. Until 2008, the equivalent fluid is listed as Dexron III or Mercon. From 2008 on, it switches to Dexron VI.

Interesting factoid 2. The same rack assembly and power steering pump are used in 2007 as 2009, despite differing fluid specs (yes Dexron VI is backwards compatible with Dexron III).

Was the change made for performance reasons, or just to use more expensive fluids?
Did the formulation of Nissan PSF actually change in 2008 (from DexIII to DexVI)?

Short story, I don't see any reason why one couldn't run DEXIII in a pinch...I won't...but just saying.
